Vitamin C: Are You Deficient?

Good Health for the Entire Family

Can you guess what happens if your body goes without any vitamin C for just a few weeks? The first symptom to occur is feeling extremely fatigued and rundown. You will become irritable and very moody at the smallest of situations. And these are just the emotional symptoms. Next you will experience bleeding gums and your teeth will start to fall out. In addition, your body will bruise to the touch, your joints will become sore just from moving your fingers, and wounds will never seem to heal.

Now don't get scared and start swallowing dozens of vitamin C tablets every day! The above deficiency symptoms are highly unlikely in today's society because vitamin C is abundant in so many foods that we eat, especially in fruits and vegetables.

Now you understand just how important this little vitamin is to good health and how it can literally keep you from dying. However, if you are a person who falls in the following categories, then you should consult with your doctor about adding vitamin C as a supplement.

You will need to supplement your diet with extra vitamin C if you:

1. Are experiencing high levels of stress and anxiety on a daily basis. The stress can be in the form of emotional, physical, or psychological. Either way, stress causes your body to pump out more hormones and chemicals which takes its toll on the immune system. By supplementing with extra vitamin C, your immune system can be supported better.

2. Are a person who experiences allergies or has asthma attacks that kick in regularly. When your body is under attack by allergic reactions or from asthma, it uses up much of the vitamin C that is available and as you know, this greatly reduces the functioning of your immune system.

3. If you are a smoker. Most men and women who smoke do not realize how much this dangerous habit breaks down the vitamin C that is in your body. In addition, smoking causes extensive damage to your cells and vitamin C can help fight the damage. Even if you are not a heavy smoker, or are around smoking secondhand, you still need to supplement with vitamin C.

4. Are pregnant and/or breast-feeding. When a woman is nursing a baby, whether in the womb or by breast-feeding, most of the vitamin C that she has in her body is passed on to the baby. This leaves little vitamin C left for the mother's body unless she has extra supplemented in her diet.
